Prayer-Activists Hope Livermore Employees
Cease Pro-Nuclear Work on Epiphany
Catholic Worker Farmers from Calaveras County, CA will come to Livermore to picket and hold a vigil at the end of the 12 days of Christmas, precisely on January 6th, known as Epiphany. The peaceful prayer activists will attempt to dialog with workers at the East Gate of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), next to the Visitor Center. This prayer-action supports a paid holiday for employees of LLNL, akin to other Holidays like the first day of Christmas (December 25th). The prayer-action begins at 7:30 am on WEDNESDAY January 6th. The nonviolent demonstration organizers expect a dozen participants at Greenville Road's East Gate. LLNL is the main location of nuclear weapons research and development in California. The peace vigil includes prayers and songs to close out the Christmas season with a hoped-for end of pro-nuclear work at LLNL, directly leading to peace on earth.
Prayer-activists at LLNL hold monthly vigils, usually on a Friday, but this month is special because of the 12-day Christian holiday of Christmas. All of the Catholic Worker vigils at LLNL aim for the peaceful end of LLNL's plutonium experiments within the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Marcus Page-Collonge of the Catholic Worker Farm said, "Those of us in Calaveras County are glad that folks didn't go to work here at the 'NIF' on Christmas Day, and it would be MOST EXCELLENT if people never went back to work at the NIF. And can you imagine how beautiful it would be if everyone honored the entire twelve days of Christmas by ceasing all pro-nuclear weapons work forever? That's what the Prince of Peace wants--no mass-destruction for God's creatures, including humans!"
Catholic Workers who hold these prayer-actions at LLNL are explicitly nuclear abolitionist, in that they desire ALL countries and all peoples to disarm their hearts from fear-based addiction to mega-violent tactics to allegedly "keep the peace".
California's Catholic Worker Farm is regionally located between LLNL and the NNSS (Nevada's nuclear testing grounds), so the farmers organize monthly vigils for environmental justice and love for enemies in Livermore, CA, a place which actively threatens the environment of Nevada and other earthly locations. The international Catholic Worker movement has consistently stood in opposition to nuclearism since that -ism was formulated in 1945 and 1946. LLNL is apparently the greatest purveyor of "nuclear weapons terrorism in California", according to Catholic Workers in Calaveras County, CA.
The first Livermore Lab vigil of 2016 is particularly poignant for folks from Calaveras County. Four months ago (September) 4,000 fire-fighters battled the terrible Butte Fire in Calaveras and Amador Counties, and the survivors of that incident continue to try to rebuild their livelihoods. Marcus continued, "That was NOTHING compared to the damage and havoc and terror that Livermore Lab is planning for the so-called 'enemies', and our Butte Fire destruction is nearly as bad as what Livermore Lab is capable of ACCIDENTALLY causing in other parts of California, due to mismanagement in handling nuclear materials at Livermore. We don't want anymore wildfire or poison-fire." His term, "poison-fire" comes from Joanna Macy's explanation of nuclear materials and the explosive damage they produce beyond all historical notions of time and space.
